know our apostle – 4

Loving friends in the Lord,

The name ‘Thomas’ appears in the Bible twelve times.
It comes from the Aramaic Toma which means ‘twin’.
Thomas in Hebrew too means ‘twin’.
Its Greek equivalent is Didymus (Jn 11:16, 20:24, 21:2).

Thomas was one of the twins.
We may guess then who the ‘other one’ was!
We do not know; we may never, ever know it!

Some say it is Jesus himself! For example:
The Gospel of Thomas and The Book of Thomas the Contender identify Thomas’ other twin as Jesus himself.
We are not certain!

We need not search the pages of the Bible to find the twin of Thomas.
We need not burrow into the caves and archives to discover the twin of Thomas.

You can find him everytime you look into the mirror!

Yes, You are the twin of Thomas!

Yes, You are the brother of Thomas!

All who have the faith, the zeal, the honesty, the self-denial, the openness, the innocence … are the twins of Thomas!

All who can look at Jesus and exclaim, “My Lord and my God” (Jn 20:28) are the twins of Thomas!

May God bless you!                               Fr John Kudiyiruppil
